At the heart of major societal transitions, housing is the focus of many challenges, including that of inclusion and citizen participation. The Interdisciplinary Innovation Platform “Inclusive Shared Housing Experience” (HIP XP) extends the work of the Participe 3.0 research programme, which aims to co-develop digital tools to support young autistic adults at the Résidence Sociale 49, towards access to shared inclusive housing.
By placing the lived experience of young autistic people and all the actors (carers, health professionals and support staff) at the heart of the approach, the project aims to create digital tools (in particular VR/AR) facilitating access to shared inclusive housing in a perspective of autonomy and full citizen participation, and to bring to light the effects of their use on the activity and its development

Objectives of HIP XP IIP
To meet the specific needs of a population of autistic adults with the aim of integrating them into the current context of integration of people with disabilities with full participation in the activities of the city, the association La Résidence sociale (LRS49) wishes to develop its medico-social offer and has joined forces with a team of researchers to deploy an inclusive housing project within the framework of participatory research (Participe 3.0) with the support of the Nantes University Foundation. The project provides for the implementation of shared housing in an ordinary environment for 8 young adults referred to a Foyer d’accueil médicalisé (FAM) or a Maison d’accueil spécialisée (MAS) with adapted support. The aim is to offer the most inclusive response possible by the end of 2022 in the commune of Saint-Barthélemy d’Anjou.
The “Hip Xp” IIP (for Inclusive Shared Housing Experience – Shared Inclusive Housing Experience) is part of this perspective of major societal transitions and is based on user experience for autistic people and their family and professional carers in connection with the “Participe 3.0” research programme. The aim is to co-develop digital tools for young adults with autism currently living in a FAM or MAS in order to help them gain access to an inclusive shared habitat with a view to autonomy and full citizen participation. The aim is to develop digital virtual reality or augmented reality tools and to reveal the effects of their use on the activity and its development. As this objective is part of a systemic approach that takes into account the support needs of family and professional carers, the inclusive housing project also brings about the necessary transformation of support practices on the part of professional and family carers.
The exploration of the user experience is involved at all levels, to understand the lived experience, the impact of these digital tools and the process of citizen co-creation on daily life. The participatory research programme involves young people with autism, but also family carers, peer carers and professionals who provide support. Around this central project, the IIP will interrogate the dimensions of the user/user experience of the habitat. Based on this specific context of the Participe 3.0 programme, “Hip Xp” will allow to build new partnerships with other social actors involved in shared inclusive housing.
IIP activities
The work of CREN researchers in the field of LRS49 and in the Participe 3.0 project is based on the participation of a team of professional and family carers, and involves users and peer carers or peer emulators. The activity of the IIP will be structured around working groups including all the academic actors of LS2N, LARIS and the City Design Lab, with a steering committee that will conduct two annual seminars and collaborative workshops with the partners to manage the contextual aspects related to the experiments and the exploration of the user experience. The coordination will be based on the following organisation:
- A launch seminar to define the specifications of the spaces and to propose the first modelling scenarios
- An annual internal seminar for the members of the research teams focused on the presentation of research work and its discussion in preparation for its scientific dissemination
- An annual research seminar open to partners, which constitutes the first phase of dissemination of our work in order to serve as a basis for other forms of dissemination (articles in recognised journals, book chapters, collective works, etc.)
- Two to three workshops per year, including students, depending on the needs and research areas, in order to produce deliverables by involving users. The aim is to bring research results to light, to coordinate the publication of results (research reports, deliverables, scientific publications, professional popularisation).
- Setting up a shared collaborative space (like the UNCloud at the University of Nantes)
The aim of these working groups is to develop a certain genericity of the results from the specific field (Participe 3.0/LRS49) in order to encourage the appropriation and transfer of results to other audiences, other situations and other contexts.
Actions undertaken and perspectives of the IIP
A first workshop took place from 17 to 21 May 2021, with a group of 9 students from the City Design Lab (EDNA) who were able to identify three areas of action: communal living spaces, private spaces (bedrooms and bathrooms) and finally circulation areas. On 18 June 2021, LARIS came to LRS49 to present the virtual reality headsets to young people with autism. For the first time, they were able to wear a helmet and watch a demonstration film. The experience was met with positive reactions and we can say that the experience was a success.
The main objective is to valorise and disseminate the knowledge produced (methods, tools and knowledge) during this work, beyond the singular context of LRS49, in the wider fields of housing and citizenship. In this perspective, it will be a question of federating interdisciplinary research that will make it possible to reinforce all the dimensions of an innovative project for society, in particular by integrating the research and innovation work of LS2N around social housing. It will also be a question of opening up the exchanges to other socio-economic partners, concerned and/or interested in this work and likely, if necessary, to participate in the research carried out as partners in the IIP. The development of the results of research, innovation and experimentation work should thus enable us to move from the production of solutions for specific user experience needs to the dissemination of tools and methodological resources aimed at society as a whole according to the new ways of caring for people with a loss of autonomy or who are highly dependent.
WIC’s IIP action in Pays de la Loire
Within the framework of its Innovation section, the Ouest Industrie Créatives programme has launched the Interdisciplinary Innovation Platforms (IIP), which aim to respond to the concrete challenges of societal, environmental, digital or industrial transitions, through the prism of user experience and innovation in use.
An IIP federates, over a minimum period of 36 months, multidisciplinary thematic Research-Innovation consortia associating researchers and socio-economic players from the Pays de la Loire. It must implement a research and innovation programme, combining academic and industrial interests, which will generate interdisciplinary scientific knowledge on the design and evaluation of the human experience, and thus contribute to providing a concrete response to one or more of the transition challenges faced by stakeholders in the region.
