Patrimonialization of modern music : scope, practices and challenges in a joint, region-wide project

Cultural economy, heritage & tourism
Research

This management sciences and economics research project was launched in 2018 by the universities of Nantes and Angers, in partnership with Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle (CIM-MCPN). Its goal is to facilitate understanding of the phenomenon of patrimonialization of modern music, particularly from the stance of the user experience.

About the project

In the context of this project, the phenomenon of patrimonialization is a complex one because of the diversity of stakeholders involved (artists, voluntary organisations, institutions, cultural industries, researchers, citizens, etc.), their numerous interactions and the involvement of a range of resources and tools.

The project will focus on the modern music ecosystem in the Pays de la Loire region and make recommendations to local stakeholders.

It will place particular attention on the notion of experience that comes into play in the process of building a case for patrimonialization of modern music (individual and collective memory, affect, desire to pass on, etc.), and the role and use of digital media (especially for creating a shared virtual space for collecting and raising the profile of all components of this cultural heritage).

The project receives 50% of its funding from the Région Pays de la Loire (RFI Ouest Industries Créatives) and 50% from the University of Nantes.

Methodology

To understand the phenomenon of patrimonialization of modern music from a dynamic and collective perspective, the conceptual and methodological framework chosen incorporates a project-specific approach (Bréchet, Desreumaux 2006, 2008, 2010; Schieb-Bienfait, Emin 2013), while the question of digital tools, as a socio-technological innovation, is addressed through the actor-network theory (Callon, Latour 1986).

Schedule

Phase 1 : literature review ; summary of the state of the art (project scope, stakeholders, socio-technological resources, challenges); study of previous projects, launch of empirical procedures; definition of research questions ;

Phase 2 : development of an analytical model for research questions; applied research on actors and action on the ground; scientific validation via publications ;

Phase 3 : feedback and development of research; applied research; validation of research and thesis finalisation.

Prospects

  • Professional and scientific publications, promoting the project through events: regional patrimonialization meetings (Nantes),  Rendez-vous du Pôle (Nantes), presenting scientific papers at specialist national and international conferences on the cultural sector and modern music;
  • Support from the Pôle de Coopération pour les Musiques en Pays de la Loire through its Folk Archives project (an initiative for safeguarding and promoting the patrimonialization of modern music in the region).
  • An opportunity to play a role in developing a national cluster project dedicated to patrimonialization of modern music.
